TEACHING AND COMMUNITY PROJECTS

Fischer Landing, Pensacola and Perdido Bay Estuary Program

Partnering with WRA Engineering, Water Resource Association, Pensacola Bay Estuary Program, and the town of Century, this STREAM-based initiative focused on watersheds, estuaries, and flood plains.  To experience this interconnectedness firsthand, students participated in a fieldtrip led by Paul Looney, Senior Environmental Scientist and Logan McDonald, Community Outreach Coordinator at Pensacola and Perdido Bays Estuary Program. Students learned that the watershed of the Escambia River is the fourth largest river in the state of Florida and has some of the richest assemblage of native North American freshwater fish and what happens upstream will affect the water downstream.  At Fischer Landing in Century, students toured the site where scientists are addressing erosion and pollution. The second part of the field trip was spent downstream at Pensacola Bayfront to study how Project Greenshore is restoring estuaries to promote healthy regeneration of a vital ecosystem.
